Sumo was originally a Shinto ritual for successful harvests dating from about 1,500 years ago.
Six professional sumo tournaments take place every year: three in Tokyo, and one each in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.
The highest rank is Yokozuna, followed by Ozeki, Sekiwake, Komusubi and Maegashira.
In general, sumo wrestlers are the strongest in all of the martial arts.
