Then 1997 saw a dramatic turn in its fortunes, with international festival awards for Shohei Imamura’s The Eel, Naomi Kawase’s Suzaku and Takeshi Kitano’s Hana-bi. Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke became the highest-grossing movie ever released in Japan, while Masayuki Suo’s Shall We Dance? became the highest-grossing Asian movie ever released in America.
