Tamahagane Steel Samurai Katana Sword Hand forged Tanto by Takemoto Tamahagane (玉鋼:たまはがね ?) is a type of Japanese steel. Translated as “jewel steel”. It is mainly used to make Samurai swords, such as the katana. The steel is made from black sand. The most useful process is the folding, where the metals are forge welded, folded, and welded again, as many as 16 times. The folding removes impurities and helps even out the carbon content, while the alternating layers combine hardness with ductility to create toughness.
