Sonya del Gallego is a small, powerfully built, cheerful woman who doesn’t exactly fit the profile of what one imagines when they think of a sumo wrestler. Not surprisingly, she is defiant in challenging gender stereotypes, and is an advocate for being yourself, regardless of whether it fits society’s standards of “normal”.
This question of what is “normal” is at the core of “Beauty Redefined”, a new series hosted by Josh Varozza. Josh, a big guy with tattoos and an incomparable beard, struck “seductive” poses for the camera clad in patriotic attire which became a viral hit as an original pin-up calendar. The light-hearted photos struck a chord with people across the country who were touched by Josh’s comfort in his own skin and how he embraced every part of himself.
Sonya, like Josh, strives to live an authentic life of being comfortable in her own skin while not taking herself too seriously. In this new episode, she talks with Josh at Body Tribe, a gym she trains at in Sacramento, and shares some insights about the world of Sumo wrestling, a serious sport steeped in tradition. While very competitive, Sonya has always been able to keep her participation in Sumo in perspective. “I’m very loose and just try to enjoy myself and have a good time,” she shares. “Even when I’m getting beat up, I enjoy it…it’s super fun.”
Sonya is actually married to a Sumo wrestler, and the couple has competed in countries all over the world. At a recent World Sumo Championship held in Mongolia, Sonya, who likes to be in the spotlight, was Team USA’s flag bearer during the opening ceremonies.
One thing you quickly notice about Sonya are her tattoos.” I love my skin,” she says proudly. “Obviously I like to decorate it and celebrate it.” She doesn’t like to wear a lot of clothing – being comfortable and free is more her style. While this approach makes her a woman who lives outside of other people’s comfort zone, it’s what makes her happy.
Josh appreciates how his new friend does not let gender stereotypes define her. “Sonya embodies self-love and self-esteem by the way she carries herself in everyday life.”
