Japanese Maple Bonsai Cleaning, Pruning & Wound Healing (First Work)

Imported raw from Japan, I’m doing the first work on my new beni chidori Japanese Maple bonsai. On the list of jobs is initial cleaning, pruning/branch selection, wound healing and weeding.

This tree is essentially a base and a trunk, the branches are 1 year-old shoots that have been wired ready for sale. The first work required is to clean the tree up. It’s necessary to address any structural issues, such as unhealed wounds, or inverse taper. Reducing the number of branches is also a good idea to ensure that all energy is put into the growth that is required.

Performing this work now is essential to set the tree up for maximum success as a bonsai.
